Short Film Days festival announced its jury, the out-of-competition and educational programmes
From 14 to 21 December 2024, Moscow will host the 11th International Short Film Days Festival supported by the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives, the Russian Union of Cinematographers and the Autonomous Nonprofit Organization ‘Integration’. The Museum of Moscow Cinema Theatre will be the central venue of the festival. The opening of the festival will take place in the event space ‘Zoloto’ (Odeon Theatre).
The jury will be chaired by People's Artist of Russia Yevgeny Gerasimov, Chairman of the Municipal State Duma Commission on Culture and Mass Communications, Chairman of the Moscow unit of the Russian Union of Cinematographers, Artistic Director of the State Theatre on Malaya Ordynka (Moscow), Artistic Director of the Moscow Academic Theatre of Satire. Anton Filipenko, theatre and film actor, director and screenwriter (‘Let's Get Divorced’, ‘Vika the Hurricane’, ‘Nasty Weather’, ‘Earth Speaks’); Andrey Bogatyrev, director, producer (‘Legends of Sambo’, ‘Red Ghost’, ‘Midland Vampires’, ‘Judas’); Marina Mongush (Abramova), president, ANO Creative Economy; Nazim Tasin, neurosurgeon, founder of film distribution company Indian Films in Russia and Zakaria Entertainment (India); Kristina Shirshova, editor-in-chief, Okko platform; Paulina Schlicht, General Director of Monumental Pictures, producer of Monumental Vision (Russia-Germany), will sit on the jury of the festival.

The TikTok generation jury includes actress Taisya Kalinina (‘Both Two’, ‘One Little Night Secret’, ‘Freeway’), Actor Timofey Kochnev (‘The Boy’s Word. Blood on the Asphalt’, ‘Cyberpapa’, ‘Summer. The Naughties’, ‘Actresses’), actor Pyotr Natarov (‘The Food Unit (Pischeblok)’, ‘Khrustalny’, ‘Breath of the Dead Forest’, ‘Tour with Ivanushki’).

The festival shortlisted 12 feature films, 10 documentaries, 7 animated films and for the first 5 premiere neural network-based films from Russia, Belarus, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Ecuador and France.

The competitive screenings will be complemented by out-of-competition, educational, business and special programmes.

The out-of-competition programme includes the Gorky Film Studio project ‘International Film Expeditions’; animated film programmes ‘My Favourite Animals’, ‘Paradoxical Poems’; feature film programmes ‘One Step Forward’, ‘One Day Older’ and ‘Homecoming’; documentary programmes ‘Filmed in the Far East’ and family films ‘Home Ground’.
The educational programme will include a pitching of the script lab ‘Formula for the Path’ with the jury consisting of representatives of leading on-line platforms and production companies; a pitching of regional film startups; an interactive masterclass by actress Roza Khairullina; a masterclass ‘Improvisation: Creative Process from Impulse to Action, from Action to Word’ to be conducted by director, theatre and film actress Anastasia Imamova; masterclass ‘Generative Neural Networks for Video Creation’ by Andrey Gladkov; round table ‘Vocational Secondary Education as a Key to Solving the Personnel Issues in the Film Industry and Television’; masterclass ‘Speech as a Communication Tool’; announcement of the winners of the 2nd International Competition of Generative AI-films; round table ‘Short Metre, Big Ideas: Family Values in the Era of Digital Formats’; masterclass on prosthetics ‘Special Effects in Make-up: Create a Terminator’ and ‘Interactive Class with a Make-up Artist: Create a Mad Hatter’ with Svetlana Aleksikova, the Ostankino School instructor; Maxim Bashorin's masterclass ‘The Art of Trailers: How to Sell Films to the Audience?’; Denis Sivtsev's master class ‘Composer in Cinema’.
Besides, a short film market survey is being carried out as part of the festival, in cooperation with the Wanta Group research company, creator of the ‘Science of Cinema’ project, and the Youth Centre of the Russian Union of Cinematographers. The findings of this study will be presented at the launch of the business programme on 14 December.
The winners of the competition programme in the following categories will be announced at the closing of the festival: Best Feature Film, Best Documentary, Best Animated Film, Best Neural Network-based Film, Best Film according to the TikTok Generation Jury, Best Directing, Best Camerawork, Best Producer, Best Acting, Best Script. The total prize fund is 1,500,000 roubles.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

The International Short Film Day has been celebrated worldwide on December 21 since 2011 on the initiative of the Centre national du cinéma et de l'imageanimée (France).

In 2014, our country hosted the first All-Russian Short Film Day Event initiated by the Youth Centre of the Russian Union of Cinematographers. In 2022, the project received the status of an international film festival and was held with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives. The festival jury of different years included such famous filmmakers and experts as Vladimir Khotinenko, Yuri Bykov, Anton Kalinkin, Ivan Kudryavtsev, Vladimir Kott, Maria Lemesheva, Sergey Pershin, Alexander Tsypkin and others.

MOVIESTART PRODUCTION CENTRE

MovieStart Production Centre was established in 2019 to support budding filmmakers in Russia and promote various formats of auteur live-action films and documentary – short films, web series, film almanacs, social commercials, etc.

The centre was founded by Dmitry Yakunin, a member of the Board of the Regional Cinema Support Fund and a member of the Public Council of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
