In one of the Russian little out-of-the-world places there lives a boy Danya, ten years old. His family consists of an alcoholic father Vadim and a teenage sister Nadia. Danya's mother is in prison. His father is sometimes visited by Larisa, with whom they work together refurbishing flats; she is also his drinking buddy and lover. One day the phone rings, and the mother informs that they release her on conditional early relief. This message makes only Danya happy; the rest do not care about her. His father is under Larisa's spell and in an alcoholic frenzy, his sister Nadia is adolescence and resentful of their mother. Danya wants to make a celebration for his mother, but in the end he realises that only he is looking forward to her coming back, and the celebration turns into a tragedy for the boy.
