Background info

The International Short Film Day has been celebrated on 21 December, the shortest day of the year, since 2011, at the initiative of the French National Centre for Cinematography and Animation. Public screenings take place in different venues: in cinemas, bars, theatres, on TV channels, at universities, libraries, schools, Internet portals, shopping malls, museums, co-working spaces, etc. In 2014, the action took place in Russia for the first time at the initiative of the Youth Centre of the Russian Union of Cinematographers.

In 2019 and 2020, the project was supported by the Presidential Grants Foundation, which contributed to the growth of the project's scale – non-profit screenings were held at more than 1200 venues, in 69 regions and 230 cities of Russia; new Russian films were shown in 29 countries of the world, and over 600 media stories were released about the project. Among the venues were cinema theatre chains, ASI’s Boiling Points, ‘Russia’s My History’ Multimedia Centres, cultural and leisure facilities, educational institutions, libraries, museums, and cafes. The events were attended by more than 220,000 cinemagoers. The campaign is held throughout Russia and abroad, making the works of young filmmakers available to the Russian and foreign audience.
